Rufforth

Three miles west of York, RAF Rufforth was a World War II bomber airfield which was still active when the northern section of the British Racing Sports Car Club preferred it to Full Sutton to host four race meetings in 1959. A bumpy 2.1-mile combination of runways and perimeter road was used that year although the layout was shortened to 1.7 miles for its second season, with the start moved from the main runway to the southern perimeter. This was very much a temporary circuit with a double decker bus as race control and sand-filled cans to mark the track. It eventually passed into private hands after the Royal Air Force moved out and it remained a club racing venue until the landowner did not renew the lease after a final meeting on 4 September 1977.
