Saarlouis

King Louis XIV of France established the fortified town of Saarlouis on the French/German border in 1680. The town on the banks of the River Saar changed hands several times before the region voted to become part of West Germany on 1 January 1957. The Motorsportclub Mittelsaar organised a race meeting on a temporary road course in an industrial area to the north of the town in May 1972. The circuit was used intermittently for Formula 3, GT and the Deutscher Automobil-Rundstrecken-Pokal (DARM) until 1978. The 1975 F3 Saarland Trophy was marred by Walter Neubauer's serious accident on the opening lap and the 33-year-old succumbed to the head injuries he sustained a month later.
