A horse track was established at the intersection of 91st Street and Wolf Road in Willow Springs, Illinois in 1886. The half-mile dirt track held some motor races in the 1920s before the grandstand was destroyed by a tornado. The facility was renovated in 1953 with 0.4375- and 0.125-mile oval tracks. Dick Rathmann’s Hudson Hornet won the only NASCAR Grand National event to be staged at the Santa Fe Speedway in 1954. It closed in 1995 to make way for “The Windings of Willow Ridge” housing development.
