Formula E founder Alejandro Agag hailed “bringing the ABB FIA Formula E Championship back to mainland China” when a multi-year deal with Sanya was announced on 3 July 2018. However, rather than returning to the mainland, Sanya is the southern-most city port on Hainan Island in the South China Sea and coronavirus rendered the event a one-off. The circuit was inland from Haitang Bay, 15 miles northeast of Sanya, which is listed as home to China’s ballistic nuclear missile fleet and national beach volleyball team. It combined public roads that included the Fengtang Road bridge and a purpose-built section in a car park between two resort hotels which included Turns 1-4, the pits and paddock. The second Sanya E-Prix scheduled for 21 March 2020 was cancelled as the pandemic spread and the race only returned in 2026.
