The New Savannah Speedway opened in late-1960 as a quarter-mile dirt oval which was doubled in length for 1962. with a NASCAR Grand national race held on the dirt on that year’s St Patrick’s Day. LeeRoy Yarbrough scored his breakthrough NASCAR victory at the half-mile oval in 1964. It was paved in 1969 and held two more Cup races before acquired and closed by the promoter of the rival Oglethorpe Speedway in 1981.
