The Neoclassical Soldier Field was built in Chicago, Illinois in 1924 at a cost of $13m. The originally named Grant Park Municipal Stadium was intended to be an all-purpose venue, and a quarter-mile cinders oval track was added in 1935. A half-mile paved oval was installed in 1956 for NASCAR’s only visit on 21 July. Fireball Roberts guided Pete DePaolo’s works Ford to victory on a rain-affected day. Racing ceased at Soldier Field when the Chicago Bears NFL team moved from Wrigley Field, with the track removed to make space for extra seating.
