Racing on street circuits was banned in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in 1968, by which time work on a new permanent facility at Viamão was well advanced. The privately-owned Autódromo Internacional de Tarumã was the first paved circuit in the state when it held its first race on 8 November 1970. A round of the International Formula 2 Torneio a year later was won by Carlos Reutemann but the event was marred by the death of Giovanni Salvati. The fastest track in Brazil, the downhill double-apex Curva Tala Larga “requires great skill and cold-bloodedness from the drivers” according to its website. A chicane was built at Turn 3 for the national stock car championship in 2014 although the original layout, now widened and resurfaced, is still used.
