Having recently held the America’s Cup yacht race, Valencia’s port area was chosen as venue for the European Grand Prix in 2008. Rather than be a strict street race, Hermann Tilke designed a semi-permanent facility using the area around the harbour. The most notable feature was the swing bridge across the harbour exit but overtaking proved difficult and racing was largely processional. It held the European GP for five years before announcing that it would alternate the Spanish GP with Barcelona. In the event, that deal did not come to fruition and Valencia has not been used since Fernando Alonso won in 2012.
