Vila Real was a classic road race for sports cars until political upheaval in Portugal led to its cancellation in 1974. It was a street circuit in the rawest state with undulating roads lined by lamp posts, walls and houses that passed over both bridges and a couple of level crossings. The circuit reopened in 1979 with national touring car events being held until 1991. A newer curtailed layout has been used since 2007 with a round of the World Touring Car Championship held here from 2015.
