The first Formula 3000 race outside Europe was held on a bumpy street circuit around downtown Willemstad on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. Although a non-championship event, the 1985 Curaçao Grand Prix attracted a full F3000 field and was hailed a success by press and public alike. However, it was not repeated when the organisers, who had commissioned the Sports Car Club of America to run the event, realised that there was no possibility of holding a full Formula 1 Grand Prix.
