International circuit racing returned to Switzerland for the first time since 1955 when Formula E visited Zürich in June 2018. Rather than employ an established circuit designer, layout for the temporary 1.529-mile street circuit was chosen by local councillor Roger Tognella with help from his son and Google Earth. It ran through the city centre and banking district with starting straight and temporary pits (designed to look like Swiss chalets) alongside Lake Zürich. A large crowd saw Lucas di Grassi win for Audi but the 2019 event was cancelled and moved to Bern due to clashing dates with two local festivals.
