Biography

Brian McGuire was a successful Melbourne motor trader who used his profits to fund his sport. He first raced in Europe in 1966 before buying a Merlyn Formula Ford 1600 with which he won at Lydden Hill in 1969 – his first ever race win.

Formula 3 and F5000

He graduated to Formula 3 in 1971 as team-mate of his friend Alan Jones in the Australian International Racing Organisation. After two successful seasons, McGuire took a break from racing to concentrate on his thriving caravan business in Brentford, West London.

He returned in 1974 in Formula 5000 just as the series waned. It was replaced by the new ShellSport British Group Eight Championship in 1976 that pitched Formula 1, F2 and F5000 machinery against each other. McGuire bought an old Williams FW04-Ford and secured sponsorship from Kelly Girl mid-season. He celebrated the new association with a dominant victory at Thruxton.

Formula 1 attempt

McGuire entered the reworked and renamed car (now known as the McGuire BM1) in the 1977 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Off the pace, he was slowest but-one in pre-qualifying and was out before the meeting had really started.

Successful in business, McGuire was under no illusions that he was the sport’s next big star, he competed for fun. However, he lost his life during warm-up before a G8 race at Brands Hatch later that season. He crashed at Stirling’s Corner when a half shaft failed and the car was launched into a marshals’ post. 24 year old John Thorpe was killed and McGuire later succumbed to his head injuries in Dartford’s West Hill Hospital.
