Biography

The son of a publishing tycoon who counted motoring title Quattrorotte among his portfolio, Cesare Perdisa enjoyed a brief career as a Grand Prix driver with Maserati and Ferrari during the 1950s. However, that choice of career did not please his father who forced him to quit after just four seasons.

Formula 1 with Maserati

Perdisa started racing a Maserati A6GCS sports car in 1954 and showed well enough to be offered a works drive for the following season. He made his Formula 1 debut in the 1955 Monaco GP and his Maserati 250F was running sixth when it was commandeered by team leader Jean Behra. Perdisa took over the Frenchman’s delayed car and ran steadily to inherit a third on his debut when Behra spun after clutch failure. Eighth in the Belgian GP, he won 2000cc sports car races at Bari and Imola that year.

A full GP season was promised in 1956 but he missed the opening round in Argentina due to appendicitis. He returned for the European season to finish third in Belgium and fifth in France when sharing with Stirling Moss on both occasions. He was slightly injured during practice for the German GP and that spelt the end to his time with Maserati.

A move to Ferrari and retirement

He joined Ferrari for 1957 and the year started with placings in the Argentine GP and non-championship Buenos Aires City race. He was also reserve driver for the Ferrari 290MM that won the Buenos Aires 1000Kms. It was a confusing race as Ferrari shuffled its drivers in the searing heat. He is credited by some as having driven in the race but this is unlikely.

However, under increasing family pressure and affected by the death of team-mate and friend Eugenio Castellotti, Perdisa suddenly retired from the sport.
