Biography

Claudio Langes raced in Europe’s junior categories for most of the 1980s but he floundered in uncompetitive machinery when he finally graduated to Formula 1.

Formula 3 career

A former national karting champion although largely unknown in motor racing circles, Langes made his Formula 3 debut at Mugello in 1982 with a Trivellato-run Dallara F382-Alfa Romeo. A mid-season switch to the works Anson SA3C-Toyota transformed his season – a string of points scores was rewarded with ninth in the European F3 Championship.

He remained with the team in 1983 but was hampered by an unsorted chassis and uncompetitive Pirelli tyres. After a difficult start to 1984 with Eddie Jordan Racing, Langes finally enjoyed success with Barron Racing’s Ralt RT3-Toyota. On pole position both for his first race with the team at La Châtre and at Monaco, he finished second on three occasions before finally scoring a maiden victory at Knutstorp. That was good enough for fourth in the 1984 standings.

Graduation to Formula 3000

Team and driver graduated to the new FIA Formula 3000 Championship in 1985 with an ex-works Tyrrell 012-Cosworth but they ran out of money after just two unhappy races. The Italian returned at the end of the year with Jordan’s March 85B-Cosworth to finish an impressive third in the non-championship race on the streets of Curaçao.

He continued to race in the category for another four largely unremarkable seasons when his meagre finances would allow. Both his highlights came at Enna-Pergusa. Fourth in 1988 with GA Motorsport’s Lola T88/50-Cosworth, he finished a career-best second for Forti Corse a year later. That day Langes’ Lola T89/50-Cosworth chased Andrea Chiesa throughout the race and finished just 0.612 seconds shy of a welcome victory.

Formula 1 with EuroBrun

It was a major surprise when Langes signed to drive an uncompetitive EuroBrun ER189-Judd in the 1990 F1 World Championship. The season could hardly have gone worse. Langes never made it through pre-qualifying in 14 attempts before the team quit Grand Prix racing.
