Biography

This Parisian showed promise in Formula 3000 and had F1 tests but his racing ambitions were not unfulfilled.

Early single-seater career

A winner in Formula Renault during 1990, Emmanuel Clérico graduated to French Formula 3 two years later with Promatecme’s Dallara F392-Opel. Immediately on the pace, he won his second and third races in the category although Clérico eventually lost the 1992 title to team-mate Franck Lagorce. Runner-up in his rookie season, he remained with the team for 1993 for what proved to be a disappointing campaign – failing to win a race and only fifth in the standings.

Formula 3000 with Apomatox

Nevertheless, Clérico graduated to F3000 in 1994 with Apomatox when paired with Lagorce once more. Consistent in qualifying, he qualified on pole position at Estoril before crashing into Lagorce during the race. That summed up a year of engine failures and raceday frustration during which he failed to muster a single point.

He remained with the team for 1995 and was a regular in the top six. The best of his five points finishes was second at Estoril as he took fifth in the FIA F3000 standings. Clérico tested for Larrousse in 1994 and Ligier a year later but would not progress to Grand Prix racing.

Switch to endurance racing

Instead, he began racing in GTs and at Le Mans. He shared the winning Chrysler Viper GTS-R in the 1999 Homestead FIA GT race with team owner Paul Belmondo – also winning for the team in that year’s French championship. 2000 Lamborghini SuperTrophy Champion, Clérico continued to race for Belmondo’s GT team until 2003.

He worked as a stunt driver in Luc Besson’s Le Mans-based movie Michel Vaillant that year before retiring from racing in 2004. He has since become a farmer near Villepreux to the west of Versailles.
