Biography

Baron "Toulo" de Graffenried was a Swiss privateer for whom victory in the 1949 British Grand Prix was his outstanding success. From an old Berne family, de Graffenried brought aristocratic charm to the sport.

Early racing career and British Grand Prix winner

He started in voiturettes during the late 1930s without making an impression, also making his GP debut in the 1938 German GP with a private Maserati 4CM.

De Graffenried formed Ecurie Autosport in partnership with Christian Kautz immediately after World War II but his cohort was killed in 1948. So de Graffenried switched to Scuderia Platé’s Maserati 4CLT/48 and he won the second GP held at Silverstone in 1949.

World Championship career

A privateer throughout the new Formula 1 World Championship in 1950, he finished second on a rare works outing in the all-conquering Alfa Romeo team in the lesser GP des Nations. That was enough to be invited to drive an Alfa Romeo 159 in three GPs during 1951 – de Graffenried finishing fifth in Switzerland and sixth in Spain.

The 1953 season was his best in the championship, with de Graffenried’s Maserati A6GCM scoring points in three rounds (including a career-best fourth in Belgium) to clinch seventh overall. He capped a fine campaign with non-championship victories at Syracuse, Goodwood and the Nürburgring (the Eifelrennen).

His final GP start came in 1956 but he remained a regular visitor to F1 paddocks as an ambassador for Marlboro, a clerk-of-the-course at some events and leading the Anciens Pilotes organisation for former drivers during his later years. He opened an Alfa Romeo dealership in Lausanne in 1950 that continued long after his racing career was over.
