Biography

The owner of a real estate company and car dealerships, this gentleman driver enjoyed a long career in sports cars and saloons. Enzo Calderari made his debut in the World Sportscar Championship in 1977 and switched to the European Touring Car Championship three years later.

European Touring Car Championship

That was as part of Eggenberger Motorsport’s BMW squad for 1980. Three seasons with the Swiss team as Marco Vanoli’s regular co-driver included six second-place finishes in the ETCC. He also drove a Group Five BMW M1 in selected sports car races during 1982 and finished third overall in the Nürburgring 1000Kms to win the class.

He raced Tom Walkinshaw Racing’s Jaguar XJS in the 1983 and 1984 ETCC and scored a couple of victories thanks to professional co-drivers Martin Brundle and John Fitzpatrick. Calderari then enjoyed some success with a CiBiEmme BMW. Second in the 1986 ETCC race at the Osterreichring, he and Fabio Mancini were surprise winners of the following year’s Tourist Trophy at Silverstone – a round of the one-off World Championship.

Post-ETCC career

The FIA suspended the international touring car series at the end of 1988 and Calderari competed in Porsche one makes and IMSA – winning his class in the 1993 Daytona 24 Hours.

A new series of GT races was introduced in 1994 and it gave Calderari’s career a new lease of life. Now sharing a Porsche with Lilian Bryner, four seasons delivered third-place finishes in Járama’s 1994 non-championship race and at Jerez at the start of 1995.

Calderari and Bryner switched to the International Sports Racing Championship in 1998 with a Ferrari 333SP. Entered by Auto Sport Racing from 1998 to 1999 and BMS Scuderia Italia for the next two seasons (2000–01), they scored podium finishes each season with three second-places their best results.

Spa 24 Hours winner

They drove a Ferrari 550M in the FIA GT Championship from 2002 to 2004 and enjoyed most success in the Spa 24 Hours. They were second in 2003 and won the 2004 race with Fabrizio Gollin and Luca Cappellari also driving. That was Calderari’s last full season although he still competed from time-to-time to the end of that decade.
