Biography

Heini Walter was a restaurateur who later ran a used car business near Basle. Motor racing was his hobby from his international debut in the 1956 Nürburgring 1000Kms until he started that race for a final time 11 years later. He won the European Hillclimb Championship for sports cars in 1960 and 1961 and for GTs in 1964 – always driving a Porsche.

Sports cars and Formula 1

He competed in 10 World Sportscar Championship races on the Nordschleife and finished sixth in 1959 and 1960 with a Porsche 718 RSK. Walter drove the 10th placed works Porsche 356B Carrera GTL on his only start in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1960.

It was with the Stuttgart marque that he made his international single-seater debut in the 1962 German Grand Prix. He qualified Ecurie Filipinetti’s Porsche 718 RSK and finished in 14th position in what was his only Formula 1 world championship race.

Walter raced for the last time in 1967 but remained active into his eighties as honorary president of the Enzmann car company.
