Biography

This Bedfordshire farmer and former national bobsleigh racer was a Formula 1 privateer who later ran Ford’s competition department.

Early racing career and Grand Prix debut

Henry Taylor began in club events during 1954 driving an Austin Seven and he won the Autosport Clubmans Championship a year later. A Jaguar D-type was acquired for 1957 and third in the Belgian Sportscar Grand Prix was his best result that year.

Taylor spent 1958 campaigning George Nixon’s Formula 2 Cooper T45-Climax – winning the Prix de Paris at Montlhéry in June. He switched to Reg Parnell’s T51 in 1959 and finished second to Stirling Moss in the Trophée d’Auvergne at Clermont-Ferrand. He also won a minor F2 race at Whitchurch near Bristol that year and finished 11th at Silverstone on his GP debut when the second F2 car home.

Formula 1 with BRP

He began 1960 racing Ken Tyrrell’s Formula Junior Cooper T52-BMC and won at Monaco after Jim Clark suffered a misfire while leading. He also drove the front-engine Laystall-Climax in F2 and returned to Formula 1. He joined the Yeoman Credit Racing Team for the Dutch GP and became a regular in the British Racing Partnership-run Cooper T51-Climax after Chris Bristow was killed at Spa-Francorchamps. Fourth after a steady drive in the French GP proved to be Taylor’s best result in the world championship.

The renamed UDT-Laystall team bought a pair of Climax-powered Lotus 18s for 1961 and Taylor opened his season by finishing fourth in the Lombank Trophy at Snetterton. He was less successful in GPs however – failing to qualify in Monaco and an also ran in the three races he did start. That included a violent accident in the rain at Aintree when Taylor broke his ribs after crashing into an advertising hoarding at the Melling Crossing on the sixth lap.

Taylor retired from single-seaters at the end of 1961 having partially lost sight in one eye. He competed in rallies and the European Touring Car Championship with a Ford Cortina until quitting driving altogether in 1966. He ran Ford’s European racing programme for a time before he settled in the south of France where he ran a boat business.
