Biography

This Rhinelander was a stalwart of the BMW marque throughout his career. Hubert Hahne’s contribution was most notable in touring cars but he also raced successfully in Formula 2 and entered his home Grand Prix five times from 1966 to 1970.

Early racing career

Initial saloon car success with a BMW 1800Ti included the 1964 German title. Hahne’s finest season came in 1966 when he undertook a dual programme with a BMW 2000Ti in the European Touring Car Championship and driving Ken Tyrrell’s Matra MS5-BRM in F2. "Tin-top" success included winning the Spa 24 Hours with Jacky Ickx co-driving his BMW 2000Ti. He then drove the winning car to Snetterton to finish second in the 500Kms ETCC event. He then drove to the Nürburgring where he won the German GP support race and set the first sub-10 minute lap of the Nordschleife in a saloon car. A day later, Hahne finished second in the F2 class of the German GP on his world championship debut. It had been a hectic couple of weeks and he was crowned European Champion in the over 1600cc class.

BMW embarked on a works F2 programme with Lola T100 chassis in 1967 with Hahne one of its drivers. Fourth at the Nürburgring that year, he was runner-up in the 1969 European F2 Championship with a BMW T102. That was a tragic year however, for team-mate Gerhard Mitter was killed during qualifying for the German GP.

Disappointing Formula 1 debut and retirement

Hahne entered the 1970 German GP with a silver Axel Springer-backed March 701-Ford but failed to qualify. He threatened March with legal action believing uncompetitive machinery was to blame but that was abandoned when Ronnie Peterson’s lap times in the same chassis proved otherwise.

Affected by the death of Jochen Rindt, Hahne retired from the sport that autumn claiming that "motor racing has today reached the limits of reason, at least as far as Formula 1 and F2 are concerned." He now lives in Italy but operates a garage business in Essen. He has also worked as a journalist and in marketing.
