Biography

Jacky Pollet had been in or around the French racing scene before making his international debut when eighth in an Ecurie Belge Gordini in the 1951 Avusrennen. He spent the next two years as one of the marque’s secondary drivers but selected Formula 2 races were without a result of note as his Gordini retired more often than not.

However, he joined the works team on a fulltime basis in 1954 and qualified on pole position for the non-championship Grand Prix des Frontières at Chimay. He disputed the lead before a stone hit his goggles and Pollet crashed into the crowd as he recovered with two spectators killed.

He then raced in that year’s French and Spanish GPs but suffered engine failure on both occasions. He also made his Le Mans debut in 1954 when sharing the sixth placed Gordini T30S with André Guelfi that won its class. Further success came in the Tour de France Automobile which he won with Hubert Gauthier.

Pollet remained with the team in 1955 but was again involved in tragedy when Mario Alborghetti crashed to his death at Pau as the Gordini driver lapped him. He finished seventh in the Monaco GP a month later in what was his best result from his five world championship GP starts.

Sports car appearances that year included almost winning the Bol d’Or at Montlhéry. The Gordini T15S he shared with Nano da Silva Ramos was fourth after being delayed by suspension troubles while leading. They also raced together at Le Mans but their Gordini T20S retired in the 14th hour. Pollet finished eighth in the 1956 Mille Miglia with a Mercedes-Benz 300SL but then slipped quietly from the sport.
