Biography

Jarek Janiš was a multiple national champion in karts and his car racing debut followed in German Formula Ford during 1999. Seventh for Eifelland Racing in his rookie year, Janiš finished as runner-up in Germany and fourth in Europe a year later.

Second in the Palmer-Audi Winter Series, 2001’s campaigns in Formula Renault and Formula 3 were less successful.

FIA Formula 3000

He ended 2001 as the youngest Formula 3000 driver in history when 16th at Monza on a one-off with Nordic Racing. He was also third on his Le Mans Series debut at Most that year when sharing a Panoz with Tomáš Enge.

Success in the lesser Euro 3000 series in 2002 persuaded manager Antonin Charouz to form an alliance with PSM for the 2003 FIA F3000 Championship. Janiš finished fourth at Barcelona and Monaco and qualified a fine third at Magny-Cours.

Formula 1 test, DTM and Champ Cars

He tested for Jordan Grand Prix at Jerez that winter but Janiš disappointed during 2004 in DTM with Team Rosberg’s Mercedes-Benz CLK and in the Surfers Paradise Champ Car race with Dale Coyne Racing.

Single-seater swansong and endurance racing switch

Janiš began 2005 in Formula Nippon but was reunited with Charouz to finish as runner-up behind Luca Filippi in that season’s Italian F3000 Championship. Winner of four of the first six races in the new International Masters in 2006, he left the series to concentrate on the FIA GT Championship when co-driver with Sascha Bert in Zakspeed Racing’s Saleen S7R-Ford.

Four pole positions and two victories confirmed their pace and Janiš – who drove a Race Alliance Motorsport Aston Martin DBR9 at the final race of the year – was fifth in the GT drivers’ standings. However, in keeping with his still young career, Janiš continued in sports cars into the new decade seemingly without a clear strategy as he hopped from series-to-series.
