Biography

A graduate of the Elf Winfield Racing School, Laurent Redon emerged as a possible future star by winning the 1995 French Formula 3 Championship with Ecurie Winfield’s Dallara F394-Fiat in what was just his second season in cars.

He moved into FIA Formula 3000 in 1996 and qualified his DAMS Lola T96/50-Zytek third for his debut at the Nürburgring. Sixth that day, fourth-place finishes at Magny-Cours and Hockenheim helped Redon to eighth in the championship. He joined Super Nova for his sophomore season in the category and again had his days with third at the A1 Ring his best F3000 result.

Formula 1 tests, sports cars and Indycar

Test driver for the Minardi Formula 1 team during 1998, he seemed in line to replace Esteban Tuero mid-season but a Grand Prix opportunity did not materialise. He repeated that test role for Benetton in 1999 although his future was away from F1. Redon had been a race winner in that year’s Sports-Racing World Cup with a Ferrari 333SP. He switched to Henri Pescarolo’s Courage C60-Peugeot in 2001 and won twice during July. The season ended with Redon driving for Conquest Racing in the Indy Racing League – finishing seventh at Chicagoland.

Indycar Rookie of the Year

A full campaign with the team in 2002 included third-place at the California Speedway as the Frenchman claimed Rookie of the Year honours. However, rather than be a springboard to further success in the United States, that was the final act in his career.

With his girlfriend pregnant, Redon put family responsibilities ahead of his racing ambitions. He retired from the sport and established a racing school at Magny-Cours in 2003 – later expanding the enterprise into Spain and the USA.
