Biography

This Englishman was a Formula 1 privateer during the early 1970s whose three seasons at the highest level were as an also-ran. Born in Egypt where his parents were stationed during World War II, Mike Beuttler was already in his mid-twenties when he started to race.

Early racing career

Beuttler worked for the Chequered Flag team after leaving school as soon as he could. He later joined the British Racing and Sports Car Club but Beuttler wanted to be more than an administrator. So he rejoined Chequered Flag as Team Manager and he began racing its Formula 3 Gemini in 1967.

With backing from stockbrokers Ralph Clarke and David Mordaunt, he drove a Brabham BT21 by the end of the following season but it was 1970 before he came to the fore. Third in the 1970 Shellsport British F3 Championship, Beuttler’s highest-profile victory to date came in that year’s British Grand Prix support race at Brands Hatch driving a Brabham BT28.

Formula 1 privateer

Now supported by stockbrokers Ralph Clarke and David Mordaunt, and with the subsequent involvement of colleague Alistair Guthrie, a new private team was formed for 1971. Beuttler started the year in Formula 2 and he led on his debut. However, his March 712M-Ford retired all too often but he won the end of season race at Vallelunga. He also started five GPs during 1971 with a Clarke-Mordaunt-Guthrie Racing March 711-Ford but he did not finish.

Another stockbroker (Jack Durlacher) was added to the consortium for the following season although Beuttler raced a March-Ford in F1 during 1972 and 1973 with little tangible success. Seventh in the 1973 Spanish GP was his best result in 28 GP starts.

After Grand Prix racing

The 1974 Brands Hatch 1000Kms was his final race before retiring from the sport to concentrate on business. He later moved to California where he died at an early age from complications due to AIDS, a disease still barely understood at the time.
