Robert la Caze was a regular in North African motorsport during the 1950s who had already enjoyed some success in regional events when he made his one and only Grand Prix appearance. Third in the 1952 Casablanca 12 Hours with a Delahaye, he won the 1954 Moroccan Rally driving a Simca Aronde.
The region was a flourishing motorsport arena at the time and Morocco hosted the final world championship GP of 1958. Keen on local interest, the organisers invited la Caze to race a Cooper T45-Climax entered in the Formula 2 class by a young Ken Tyrrell. He ran among the backmarkers all day to finish third in the class.
La Caze started the Le Mans 24 Hours on three occasions but never finished. His debut in 1957 ended when his works Gordini T15S suffered engine failure in the second hour. He returned in 1959 and 1960 in Jean Kerguen’s private Porsche only to suffer similar disappointment albeit later in the race.
Those were the sum total of his international races although he did win the Moroccan Rally again in 1967 when sharing a Renault Eight Gordini with Raymond Ponnelle.
