Biography

Destined to become Denmark’s first Grand Prix driver, Tom Belsø won his very first race and was Scandinavian Touring Car Champion in 1969. With a Formula Ford prize drive as a result, Belsø sold the family home and moved to England to further his career and he finished third in the 1971 British Formula Atlantic Championship.

Impatient to progress his career (Belsø was already 29 years old by this time), he made his Formula 2 debut in 1972 with a Team Viking Brabham BT38. Fifth at Hockenheim and fourth at Albi were the highlights as the Dane finished 17th in the final points.

Brief Formula 1 career

It was enough to earn a drive in the thriving European Formula 5000 Championship in 1973 with Jackie Epstein’s Lola. Belsø also hired a Williams FW03-Ford for the Swedish GP but was prevented from starting after promised sponsorship monies did not arrive in time.

He did make his Formula 1 debut for the team in the 1974 South African GP and then finished eighth in Sweden. He also failed to qualify twice but that was the sum total of Belsø’s F1 career so he continued to race for Epstein in F5000 in 1975.

Sponsorship proved ever-more difficult to secure and he raced in F5000 for the last time in 1977. That was the year that he established Belso Cereals – a manufacturing company based in Peterborough. The company employed 30 people by the time he sold it to Bokomo Foods of South Africa in 2005.
