Biography

Of Italian decent and the son of the General Manager of the International Harvester Company, Tony Settember settled in California when 19 years old where he ran a car tuning firm. He started racing in regional SCCA events in 1954, initially with a Jaguar XK120M before switching to Corvette and Mercedes 300SL.

He won races across California and Arizona as the decade drew to a close before travelling to Italy in 1959. His WRE-Maserati sports car beat the locals at Naples and Settember also drove in the Formula Junior race that supported the 1960 United States Grand Prix – his Stanguellini-Fiat finiahing in seventh position.

Formula 1 with Emeryson and Scirocco

That whetted the appetite for single-seaters and Settember moved back to Europe in 1962. He hired a works Emeryson Mk2-Climax for a schedule of that year’s lesser Formula 1 races with fifth at Crystal Palace his best result. He also made two Grand Prix starts (finishing 11th on his debut in the British GP) and retired a Chevrolet Corvette on his only start at Le Mans in 1962.

Settember and Hugh Powell Jr – the young son of an American millionaire – bought Emeryson at the end of the season and formed Scirocco-Powell Racing with workshops behind a pub in Goldhawk Road, West London. The Scirocco 01-BRM first appeared in the 1963 Belgian GP resplendent in American blue and white racing colours. Settember was classified eighth despite crashing with seven laps to go.

The project was not a success however and he failed to finish any of the three subsequent GPs he started. His best result came in the non-championship Austrian GP when a distant second behind Jack Brabham despite suffering clutch failure at the start.

Return to America

The team disbanded in some acrimony as the finances ran out. Settember returned to sports cars in America with a Lotus and then an AC Cobra in 1964 and 1965. He entered the Cobra in three World Sportscar Championship races (Targa Florio, Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring) during 1966 before switching to Can-Am with a Lola T70-Chevrolet for the next two seasons.

He raced in Formula 5000 from 1972 to 1974 before retiring from racing to further his career in manufacturing and industry.
