Biography

Wade Cunningham became New Zealand's first World Karting Champion when he won the Formula Super A title in 2003. He immediately graduated to cars and finished fifth in the 2004 New Zealand Formula Ford Championship – a rare campaign spent in his homeland so far.

Indy Lights

The 20-year-old moved to America in 2005 to race in Infiniti-Pro (now known as Indy Lights). That was with a Team New Zealand-entered car and Cunningham finished in the top three in all but four races. He also won the final round at Fontana’s California Speedway to clinch the championship in his rookie campaign.

He moved to veteran team owner Brian Stewart’s concern to defend his title and won the Freedom 100 at Indianapolis from pole position. Despite two further victories, Cunningham was only third in the standings and he repeated that position for AFS Racing in 2007. After a winless partial season in 2008, he won races for Sam Schmidt Motorsports in 2009 and 2010 (including the Indianapolis support race for a third time).

Indycar graduation

Cunningham finally made his Indycar debut by entering four races during 2011 with Schmidt’s Dallara IR4-Honda. However, he was involved in the accident at Las Vegas that cost Dan Wheldon his life.

Retiring from the 2012 Indianapolis 500 when entered by A.J.Foyt Enterprises, he returned to the team for the final round at Fontana to replace Mike Conway. He finished in 14th position.
