Biography

Xavier Perrot was a Zürich garage owner who raced from 1956. That was the year after circuit racing was banned in Switzerland in the wake of the Le Mans tragedy so his first experience was in slalom events before trying his hand in rallies and then national hillclimbs.

Formula 2 and Grand Prix appearance

Perrot switched to Formula 2 when he bought a Brabham BT23C-Cosworth from Roy Winkelmann in 1968. He entered the European Championship under the Scuderia Tartaruga banner but it was soon apparent that this would be a less-than competitive graduation.

He did finish fourth in the non-championship 1969 Rhein Pokalrennen at Hockenheim before entering the German Grand Prix in the F2 class. Tenth-placed Perrot was the last car still circulating on his only world championship appearance. He bought new F2 March for each of the next three seasons with little improvement in results.

Rare Formula 2 success

There was one rare exception to that form during 1970. The Nürburgring was stripped of the German GP as it was being upgraded that year and so the F2 Preis von Deutschland was held instead. When both Vern Schuppan and Derek Bell retired late in the race, Perrot inherited a surprise victory.

He had a one-off F1 drive in 1971 when he hired Jo Siffert’s March 701-Ford for another non-championship race at Hockenheim. He qualified on the penultimate row and finished in 11th position – four laps behind Jacky Ickx’s winning Ferrari.

Perrot’s last and best season in F2 came in 1972, during which he finished in the top six on three occasions to be classified 13th in the European Championship. Fourth at Hockenheim, Perrot also won that year’s European Hillclimb Championship for racing cars. He retired from the sport in 1973 to concentrate on his garage business. He died in a Zürich hospital in 2008 after a long illness.
