Porsche stretched its lead in the record books by claiming an 18th victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours – but that’s not what the 84th running of the great race will be remembered for. The lingering image will be of a hybrid Toyota coasting to a halt, out of power, a little over three minutes short of victory – and of dear old Hugues de Chaunac, heartbroken, in tears… a broken man. Sport can be cruel, but this was on a scale that was almost overbearing.

Anthony Davidson, Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima had driven beautifully and deserved to deliver Toyota the victory it has coveted so dearly for 30 years. Suitably, it was Nakajima who was in the car for those final minutes as Le Mans finally prepared to herald only the second Japanese victory since Mazda’s success way back in 1991. But then the TS050 Hybrid began to slow.
