Formula 1 championship leader Oscar Piastri topped Friday practice for the Miami Grand Prix, which was interrupted by a late red flag.
The McLaren driver, the winner of the last race in Saudi Arabia, outpaced Ferrari‘s Charles Leclerc by 0.356s ahead of sprint qualifying later in the day.
Max Verstappen, racing in Miami after becoming a dad earlier this week, was third quickest in the Red Bull ahead of the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
Team-mate Alexander Albon completed the top five.
Piastri’s team-mate Lando Norris finished down in 12th position, 1.2s off the Australian’s pace, one place ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari.
Norris faced an investigation after his car was released in an “unsafe condition”, the Briton claiming there were stray tools inside of his cockpit as he went out for the first time.
“There’s just so many tools in the cockpit. Everything is just falling apart,” Norris said on the radio.
After the investigation, McLaren was given a warning.
Haas’s Ollie Bearman caused a red flag with less than five minutes left in the session when he spun at Turn 12 and made contact against the wall.
The car wasn’t badly damaged, but the session was stopped and didn’t resume.
