Keeping up with Jones

Sir,

Just a point of clarification in the auto racing history magazine of record.

When Parnelli Jones won the Mission Bell 200 Trans-Am race at Riverside in 1970, his victory didn’t change any championship outcomes. While SCCA tallied driver points as they related to manufacturer points, the points were only for a manufacturers’ championship. The first drivers’ championship was awarded in 1972.

(If this doesn’t make sense, you can understand why John Bishop left SCCA and organised IMSA.)
