FIRST RACE VICTORY OF MORGAN 4/4

R. CAMPBELL WINS ULSTER TROPHY RACE AT FASTEST AVERAGE BY A. CONAN-DOYLE 53.73 m.p.h. (BUGATTI)

Yet another excellent Irish road-race has come and gone. The I.M.R.C.’s Ulster Trophy race was notable for several crashes of a minor nature and for a very high percentage of retirements, for out of twenty-one starters only nine finished the race. The four-mile Ballydare course is on the whole good, if slower that was expected and bally

narrow in. places Spectators were, in our opinion, allowed to assemble far too close to the road, with inadequate protection. The race was handicapped on a system of credit laps and given a mass start, with the cars placed in positions in handi

cap order. Ivo Peters, from the front line, rapidly went ahead iii his new 2.0-litre Alfa-Romeo, but Robin Hanson brought

his Maserati past him, and ConanDoyle’s twin-cam *litre straight-eight Bugatti and Powys-Lybbe ‘s well known 2.3-litre Alfa-Romeo clung to Peters’s tail. Then Hanson left the road about half a mile from the start at a series of difficult bends, the Maser poking the hedge and suffering damage in consequence. On the straight leg Lybbe came up to second place, and after one lap Peters had 10 Secs. lead, followed by Lybbe, Doyle, H. B. Prestwich (M.G. Magnette) and Faulkner (M.G. Magnette). After three-quarters of the race was run R. Campbell of Belfast, driving the Morgan 4/4 for his employer’s wife, Mrs. R. B. Parish, because Mr. Parish’s Competition Licence had not been forthcoming, was fourth on handicap. He had eight laps credit in thirty-six hips of 149 miles total and had lapped con sistently at 53i m.p.h. The leader at this stage was H. B. Prestwich (singleseater K3 M.G.), winner of the Cork race, Who had lapped consistently at 66 m.p.h., doing one lap at 68 m.p.h. Second was Campbell’s own J2 M.G., driven by R. Scott, with G. Best’s P-type M.G. third. Shortly afterwards Campbell got past Best, as did J. R. Weir (driving Murray-Frame’s K:i M.G. Magnette) and Adrian OmanI io v 1 e (Bugatti). Now it was Prestwich’s turn, and fiveand-a-half valuable minutes were spent

in the pit as a result. The Morgan 4/4 had its chance and won by two minutes at 53.76 m.p.h. Weir, also troubled by mis-firing, managed to snatch second place with his M.G. at 64.26 m.p.h. Prestwich just got home third at 65.33 m.p.h. and Conan-Doyle pipped Wilson’s Lagonda Rapier right on the post to get fourth place, averaging the highest speed of anyone at 65.83 m.p.h.
