Letters From Readers - Ugh! - MG-B, March 1975

Sir,

I was aghast when I picked up the October MOTOR SPORT (which arrived Jan. 7th) and saw the 1975 MG-B. The American romance with the MG has gone on for over twenty-five years. We Americans learned what a sports car was from the MG TCs that came to our shores in 1948. We have waited patiently (with many Englishmen) for thirteen years for a new model. It’s really hard to think that that misshapen monster that you have photographed is our reward.

With the American Auto industry in a deep depression it’s impossible to think of anyone here parting with almost $5,000 for that monstrosity. It would be a kindness to all who have loved the MG to just quietly close the plant. It is one thing to have external factors bring an end to it fine automobile; it is quite another to have it die of embarrassment. Please don’t ship that thing over here – we’d rather remember MG the way it was.
