An August Assembly

Although it was not the last VSCC race this year, the August meeting at Cadwell Park retained its delightful atmosphere, rare sunshine filtering through the trees of the scenic and hilly circuit where BBC cameras were stationed — but only for the motorcycle event of the Bank Holiday Monday. Unfortunately the major event, the Williams Trophy, was curtailed after an alarming accident stopped what...

Road Test -- BMW 325i

World Class Leader When BMW were faced with replacing the two boxy generations of 3-series that had served from 1975 to 1990, with over 3.5 million sales, they knew their largest volume seller demanded a brand new body. Gone are the upright lines and air of quality that was the envy of the non-Mercedes manufacturing World: in came the aero generation 3-series, plastics to the fore. The result was...

The VSCC in Herefordshire

Early in March, the VSCC trialists assembled at that most useful venue The Verzons, near Ledbury, for the Herefordshire Trial. Entries were down this year, from 105 in 1992 to a nonetheless respectable 87, and were divided into two classes: short and longer wheelbase. As an additional post-birthday treat I was allowed to ride as 'navigator' to Seymour Price in his son's Austin 7 Ulster. As...

Slippery Lappery

The forecast said rain, and rain there was! So during the Shuttleworth & Nuffield Trophies Meeting at Donington Park on September 19, finale of the 1987 VSCC racing season, spins and wild slides at the chicane provided additional entertainment. Most older cars used to oversteer, but many owners have since made them understeerers, as the slippery conditions clearly demonstrated . . . The...

VSCC Welsh Trial

Mud and Hills The VSCC held another highly successful Welsh Two-Day Trial, with the usual 100-mile run in, on October 10-11, although heavy rain beforehand made the seventeen hills difficult. In the starting-area at Presteigne, focal point of the first of these events back in 1939, 24 of the 83 cars entered were A7s (of the usual variety, from Chummy to Ulster, and including Gunn's Taylor two-...

For Moffat read Felton

Sir, Hamish Moffat may well have been both a host and a competitor at the Brescia weekend as described in the September Motor Sport, but the photo was miscaptioned. That was Rodney Felton's Type 13, not Moffat's. Among the spectators in the background are Hugh Conway and Sandy Greene who came all the way from Wellesley, Mass., USA to see the fun. R.W."Bill" Leith, Jr., Dedham, Mass. USA.

Silverstone VSCC

Although 'new' cars were thin on the ground at the VSCC's traditional April season-opener at Silverstone, there was a healthy entry for the eleven-race programme and some close-fought finishes. And after Friday's wash-out test day it was a relief to find Saturday 13th calm and sunny all day. A capacity field of 34 starters contested the Brooks 1950's Sports Car Race, with the front row of Frank...

The Verzons

The Verzons Time flies, and on new years day it was off to 'The Verzons' near Ledbury for another of Mark Garfitt's great gatherings, with around 100 pre-1941 cars and many others of interest. The Distance award went to Antony Dacey from Hove in a 1938 Lancia Aprilia. Familiar arrivals included the 35B, 49 and 35T Bugattis of Mike Marshall, Keith Hill, and Garfitt in Sally Marsh's car. Hamish...

Best-Laid Plans

The Vintage Sports Car Club held its OuIton Park race meeting over the weekend of July 16-17 along with bicycle races, autojumbles, tugs-of-war, concours d'elegance and all the fun of a motor fair. There were 255 entries (against 227 last year) plus 28 Morgan three-wheelers racing under ACU rules. Eight races were intended on the Saturday, six on Sunday, but continuous heavy rain posed problems....

VSCC Pomeroy Trophy

Despite being organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club, the Pomeroy Trophy offers cars of all ages the opportunity of competing on (hopefully) level terms in a variety of tests of driving and mechanical ability.  Assembling at a chilly Silverstone on the first Saturday in March were cars ranging in age from Collings' 1903 Mercedes to the Porsche 928S of D. Biggins, and in size from D. Woodward's...
