The sun was beating down and the adoring fans were out in force to show support for their hero, Nigel Mansell, as he roared past in the Williams FW14B.

1992 British GP, Silverstone? No, Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022. Three decades might have passed since that glorious championship year for one of the great British racing icons, but his ability to whip crowds up into a frenzy hasn’t dimmed – nor the reciprocal appreciation displayed by all those present on the estate, as shown in our gallery below.

This year’s Festival of Speed promised to be one of the best ever, with a vast number of stunning competition and road cars running as well as being on show. Max Chilton might have blasted to a brilliant new record on the Hillclimb, but not even that moment of racing history could top the main event.

It didn’t disappoint either – Mansell, who was driving both his title-winning Williams FW14B and the unraced Ferrari 639, as well as Jim Clark’s Lotus 25, brought back some of F1 fans’ most cherished memories with the gutteral growl of his V10 and V12 cars.

They weren’t the only ones getting nostalgic though:

“It’s incredible,” said the man himself at Goodwood. “Sitting in the car this morning, the memories that come flooding back are astonishing, and a very special time with Ferrari and the 640.

“Here, this iconic car [639, development car for vicotrious 640], winning first time out in Rio [in 1989], that fantastic race in Hungary from 12th on the grid to win the race and passing Ayrton [Senna] in the way that we did in the race was just marvellous.”

Il Leone, as he was dubbed in Italy after his time at the Scuderia, went on to describe also what it meant to drive for Ferrari.

“The fans worldwide are just incredible, but when you drive Ferraris, it’s something very special. If you’re two years of age in Italy or 92 years of age, everybody knows who drives for Ferrari.

“If you win a race, it’s not like winning a race in any other country in the world, because all the bells throughout the country ring in all the churches – and how many teams get a visit from the Pope? It’s an institution.”

Mansell was no less effusive when describing what it was like to get back behind the wheel of his FW14B, which he described as an “amazing car.”

“It was wonderful, lovely,” he said. “Last night we were reacquainted after a long, long time and had a little practice go up the hill.

“The car obviously is a little bit delicate – first and second gear it’s okay to give it the berries a little bit but just like this car [the 639] it jumps gear, so you have to be very protective because we want the cars to run every day.

“The Williams especially we have to be very careful with  – an amazing car and the mechanics have done a fantastic job to get it running. It’s just a joy to be here to drive it.”

Mansell also commented on what it was like to be back at FoS after a number of years away.

“It’s fantastic,” he said. “And many, many compliments for what his grace has done, Lord Charles, it’s just absolutely amazing. It’s fantastic for motor sport to have someone like this, to put on a presentation for four days for the fans, the cars, the drivers the sponsors, everyone who’s displaying their wares. It’s just an incredible sight for it, isn’t it?

“Everybody throughout the world must be very grateful for what his grace has done.”
