Today’s F1 starting grid for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix after Stroll pulls out

Oscar Piastri will start on pole for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix after a devastatingly fast qualifying lap. Here's how the starting grid — with only 19 drivers — looks for Sunday's race in Barcelona

Oscar Piastri will be on pole for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix after a tense qualifying duel for pole position between the McLaren team-mates.

Lando Norris had been on provisional pole with his first run during Q3, the final stage of qualifying, but was just 17-hundredths of a second ahead of Piastri.

He was first to make a second run and improved slightly but it was nowhere near enough to match Piastri’s explosive final lap, which saw the championship leader take pole by more than two-tenths of a second.

Scroll down or click to see how the grid — with just 19 drivers after Lance Stroll pulled out of the race — will look when it lines up for the ninth grand prix of the season, which starts at 2pm in the UK (3pm local time in Barcelona).

Max Verstappen and George Russell will start on the second row behind the McLarens after setting identical times. They are followed by Lewis Hamilton, who outqualified his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, and Kimi Antonelli.

Fernando Alonso was cheered by home fans on his only Q3 run but he was last of the top ten, behind Leclerc, Pierre Gasly and Isack Hadjar.

Williams had no cars in the final Q3 stage for the first time this season. Gasly beat Alex Albon to the final tenth place by three-hundredths of a second, and the Williams driver was joined in the drop zone by Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson, Lance Stroll and Oliver Bearman.

Carlos Sainz in the other Williams had already dropped out in Q1, along with Red Bull‘s Yuki Tsunoda who starts last. He was 0.6sec slower in Q1 than Verstappen, who was second-fastest in that first stage of qualifying.

The other Q1 departees were Nico Hülkenberg, Esteban Ocon and Franco Colapinto whose Alpine wouldn’t move from the end of the pitlane as the clock ticked down towards the end of Q1. Other drivers had to snake around the stranded car and Colapinto had no chance to make a final run.

After qualifying, Aston Martin announced that Stroll had been suffering hand and wrist pain, and would miss the race to undergo a medical procedure. The drivers who qualified lower than Stroll’s 14-place grid slot will all move up one place.

Below is the full starting grid as it stands unless any penalties are applied ahead of the race.
