The new format has re-shuffled the order of sprint events across an F1 race weekend, with both qualifying and the shortened race taking place before any grand prix events, which retain their traditional Saturday (qualifying) and Sunday (race) schedules.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull face a heightened challenge to their position as the best ‘sprinters’ in the field this year, despite winning the first two sprints of this season.
Verstappen failed to make front row for the first sprint race of 2024 at the Chinese Grand Prix after the world champion struggled in a wet sprint shootout and started the race fourth, but was soon back in his familiar place at the head of the race, eventually winning by 13 seconds. He also won the second race in Miami, leading every lap, but only crossing a line. Since then, competition from McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari has only intensified.
Last year, Verstappen won sprint events in Austria, Belgium, the US and Brazil. Team-mate Sergio Perez picked up a win in Azerbaijan and McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri scored a career-first victory in Qatar.
