Max to stay, Tim Mayer to stand for president and Alpine gets its man

  • Max Verstappen is expected to stay with Red Bull for 2026.
  • Steve Nielsen has agreed to be MD of the Alpine F1 team and has accordingly resigned his position with Formula One Management. Nielsen spent much of his long career at the Enstone-based team as sporting director.
  • Tim Mayer has announced he will stand for the FIA presidency in December against the incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Son of the late McLaren team boss Teddy Mayer, he served as an FIA steward for three decades before being dismissed by Ben Sulayem in November 2024.
  • Red Bull has dismissed the idea of Sebastian Vettel replacing Helmut Marko. Vettel won four Formula 1 world titles with the team from 2010-13.
  • A Ferrari switch to a development Brembo brake disc/pad designed to give more instant bite is what caught out Lewis Hamilton in Spa sprint qualifying as he braked too hard towards the end of his SQ1 lap and spun.
  • Latest intel on the 2026 power units are that all five manufacturers are within 10kW of each other at the moment, but that there could be big variations in how it’s delivered and therefore to which track layouts they will be suited. Reliability of the electrical part of the units is proving a big challenge for at least some of them.
  • The F1 movie has taken £382m making it Apple Studios’ highest-grossing film ever and one of the biggest releases of 2025.
