Rally Review

Swedish Rally Two significant facts emerged from this year's International Swedish Rally. Firstly Stig Blomqvist must be the most difficult man to beat in rallying today; secondly if local rules are to take precedence over international practice competitors, foreign ones in particular, should be given adequate notice. Stig Blomqvist has been rallying for a number of years but it wasn't until...

Rally Review

The Welsh Rally OF THE five main international rallies in the British Isles (organised by people of five different nationalities, incidentally) the Welsh Rally is the one which has always been regarded as the low-cost event for clubmen, the rally on which aspiring competitors could cut their big-time teeth. The reason for this was simple; it was all crammed into one weekend, from Friday to Sunday...

Welsh Rally

Two celtic internationals were to have featured in this month's Motor Sport; instead there is only one, for the Scottish Rally was needlessly cancelled by the RSAC when a petrol shortage was created in Scotland by a strike at a petrol distribution centre. There were fears that the shortage would cripple the rally, but instead of waiting for definite news the RSAC decided at noon on the Wednesday...

"Getaway" Gets Caught

"Getaway" Gets Caught Sir, I watched with interest the BBC-2 coverage of the RAC Lombard Rally and through your excellent publication I would be obliged to be afforded the space to make a few comments. First. I was more than surprised to hear the great Stuart Turner make a few boobs— Nigel Rockey at no time climbed to fifth place if one was to believe BBC radio and other media. Rockey excelled...

Around and About

Rallying value The Mintex Dales Rally opened what could well be one of the most exciting seasons of rallying in Britain as entrants contest the title of RAC British Rally Champion. We spectated on the Mintex, and were impressed by the number of manufacturers directly or indirectly involved, and the sheer value of over 40 special stage sections for under £25 entry fee. Travelling quickly round the...

The Arctic Rally

Rally Review The Arctic Rally Rainio wins for Saab Event could go ahead, along with some of the qualifiers in the Finnish Ice Racing Championship. Alas the short time which the organisers had left to make their plans (less than three weeks) affected the running of the event somewhat and many foreign competitors decided against the trip simply because they could not finalise their travel and car-...

Unbeatable McRae

Sir, Having been lucky enough to witness Jimmy McRae's dominance of the Circuit of Ireland throughout the 1980s and see each of his seven victories, I was surprised at his comment regarding Bertie Fisher being the one driver who he always watched out for. The records will show that the only driver to put it up to McRae in Ireland was Russell Brookes. Finishing runner-up to him four times and...

Rally Review - Total Rally of South Africa

It is a common belief that the world's best rallies are those which are qualifying rounds of the World Championship for Makes. This is largely true, but there are exceptions. Indeed, there are several rallies here and there around the globe which are every bit as competitive and worthwhile as those which are championship qualifiers, but are not chosen for that series because it has no more than a...
