Grand prix wins have been like buses for Max Verstappen in 2026. He waited seven months for his first, then took two on the trot. Add to that, the Red Bull star also won the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race.

Charles Leclerc attempted to hang on gamely, the Ferrari pressing early on as Verstappen strove to overcome deployment problems. The other Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton at the wheel, was alone among the leading contenders to start on medium tyres. With little sign of the faster softs degrading, he pitted out of third place on lap 18 to join the throng on the preferable rubber.

The rest, of course, had to take medium tyres at some stage, and were thus equipped when the traditional virtual safety car for a broken-down Aston Martin (Lance Stroll this time, clutch bothers) was called. Hamilton’s soft tyres were now 21 laps old and he ignored the call to pit. He was second when the race went green, but would pay the price to those who had pitted under VSC for new softs.

Leclerc was first to pass Hamilton. Then Lando Norris’s attempt into Turn 1 ended with the McLaren running briefly off track to the outside, and Hamilton bypassing Turn 2 entirely. Antonelli ambushed Norris for fourth on the exit, then quickly got past Hamilton for an eventual third place. To compound Hamilton’s gloom, he lost a further place to Norris, while the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri got past him on the penultimate lap.

Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell, his closest rival in the championship, crashed out of the sprint race while leading on the second lap, and saw his sixth place in GP qualifying turned into 19th on the grid when he took a penalty for an engine change thanks to his late-race retirement in Malaysia. He could only make it up to ninth at Marina Bay, giving Antonelli a 102-point lead and a chance of being crowned at Austin. MJS

Faultless in winning at Singapore for the first time, putting a car that was competitive but not dominant onto pole and using that to prevail over the equally fast Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. It was a case study in weekend-long perfection.

Bahrain Oct 2-4

Considering Max Verstappen has been the most scathing of the new-for-2026 Formula 1 engine regulations, it was fitting that it should be a wonderful drive to a first victory of 2026 for the four-time world champion that went some way towards banishing the memory of a spectacular illustration of the power units’ shortfalls.

But only a little bit… As if holding the ‘Bahrain Grand Prix’ at Sepang in Malaysia wasn’t confusing enough, there was chaos on the formation laps – on a wet track after a passing thunderstorm had done its bit – with Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton among those grinding to a halt. A software update to remove the energy limitations was then installed after the farce was red-flagged. So far, so 2026.

Verstappen’s slow start from pole handed the initiative to Mercedes pair Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. The Red Bull driver got past the Brit, but the Italian still led when a safety car was called to retrieve the Cadillac of Valtteri Bottas from a gravel trap. When the race resumed, with the leaders having traded their intermediate tyres for slicks, Antonelli and Verstappen ran side by side through three corners before the Dutchman took the lead, Russell also getting a fine exit from Turn 4 to pass Antonelli.

Nine laps later, Antonelli was back ahead of Russell, and this was how they ran for the bulk of the race before Alex Albon’s Williams stopped with gearbox failure. After everyone pitted again, they were still circulating behind the safety car when Russell’s power unit cried enough, and he parked in the pitlane exit.

Verstappen had little trouble holding off Antonelli over the four-lap sprint to the finish, during which the star was Hamilton. Ferrari gaffed by sending Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to the start on slicks, but the seven-time champion and his team-mate both eased past the Red Bull of Isack Hadjar to claim third and fourth respectively. Pole, fastest lap and the win – just – for George Russell in Baku, with team-mate Kimi Antonelli down in fifth

Azerbaijan Sept 24-26

George Russell dominated from pole position on the streets of Baku, after a qualifying shunt had left Mercedes team-mate and series leader Kimi Antonelli in the nether regions of the grid, down in 16th.

Only Max Verstappen posed a threat to the supreme East Anglian. The Dutchman qualified eighth, and ran much of the race in third just ahead of Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar, but unable to challenge Oscar Piastri’s McLaren in second. Then two safety car periods closed the field up. Verstappen jumped Piastri at the first restart, and, after the second, the Australian outbraked himself at Turn 1, taking to the escape road and plummeting down the field.

Slowing on the final lap for Valtteri Bottas’s crashed Cadillac cost Russell electrical boost; he only just held off Verstappen, with Hadjar a fine third. MJS

Returning to the Red Bull cockpit after his three race absence due to a wrist injury in training, Hadjar was properly competitive all weekend. That he outqualified Max Verstappen was about the engine problem in the latter’s car, but in the race he ran third on the faster tyre, moved aside for Verstappen (who was on the slower tyre) but kept pace just behind. When the compounds were swopped at the stops, he was left behind but took a fully merited third place. MPH
