Podcast: Gary Anderson — engineering F1 success for Hunt, Prost and Jordan

Motor Sport Podcast

What does it take to get the best out of racing's leading drivers? In our latest Engineering the Greats podcast, former McLaren engineer and Jordan designer Gary Anderson joins Rob Widdows to talk working with Prost and Hunt, and designing one of F1's greatest cars

With four decades of experience in F1, Gary Anderson has worked with James Hunt and Alain Prost; he famously designed Jordan’s first grand prix car, the 191; and he’s also had a taste of IndyCar.

He joins Rob Widdows for the latest in our Engineering the Greats podcast series, in association with Scalextric, and tells of what it takes to work with some of the best drivers in the sport.

From humble beginnings – starting working life as a builder – Anderson got his big break as an engineer with Brabham in 1972 before moving to McLaren to aid the world title ambitions of Hunt and Prost. He then moved to IndyCar to work for the legendary Galles Racing team while building a lasting relationship with Roberto Moreno – a driver that Anderson believed had Prost-like ability.

Anderson was then tempted back to F1 and Britain, convinced by Eddie Jordan to design him a grand prix car, which became the Jordan 191: the epitome of simple efficiency, which catapulted the team to fifth placed in the constructors’ championship during its debut season, and also gave Michael Schumacher his F1 debut.

He rounded out an incredible career with Stewart Grand Prix and Jaguar, and remains a knowledgeable and engaging commentator of the sport.

In the latest episode of Motor Sport’s Engineering the Greats series, Anderson reveals what it was like to work through some of racing’s biggest challenges, while suggesting how the current series could adapt to return to closer racing.
