Formula 1’s penalty points system will be familiar to anybody who has been caught speeding: grand prix drivers who commit some offences incur points on the superlicence that they need to race in F1. Anyone receiving 12 or more within a 12 month period will receive a single race ban.
At the moment, 14 of the 21 F1 drivers to have raced this 2025 have penalty points. Max Verstappen has come closest to missing a round of the current season after colliding with George Russell’s Mercedes at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix and receiving three points, which saw him start the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix with 11 on his licence.
Since then, two of his penalty points have expired — a year after being issued — which leaves him some breathing room but still treading a fine line. His remaining nine penalty points gives him the highest total on the grid at the moment. Scroll down or click here for the full list of drivers and their penalty points.
Verstappen’s situation illustrates just how costly even minor infractions can be in the modern F1 landscape, where penalty points can be issued for serious infractions such as dangerous driving and avoidable collisions, as well as procedural missteps like failing to remain within a certain speed range during safety car periods, or driving too slowly in qualifying cool-down laps.
So far, Kevin Magnussen is the only driver to have accrued 12 penalty points: he was banned from last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. However, Verstappen isn’t the only one currently skating close to the edge. Haas rookie Ollie Bearman has jumped to eight penalty points after being hit with four for a bizarre and costly pitlane crash during practice at Silverstone.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri also landed in the stewards’ book at the British Grand Prix, where he picked up a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points for braking erratically while following the safety car – bringing his total to four. His team-mate, Lando Norris, remains on three points, all carried from a yellow flag infringement at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.
With half the season still to go, the superlicence points system is playing an increasingly pivotal role in the championship narrative – not just for frontrunners like Verstappen but for the entire grid, where one slip-up could have major consequences.
