McLaren looks likely to win the Formula 1 constructors’ championship in Singapore on Sunday, as it starts the race within touching distance of its tenth title.

Having dominated most of the first 17 races of the 2025 season, McLaren‘s sensational run — 12 victories and 27 podium finishes — has left the team 333 points clear of Mercedes following Azerbaijan, where a disappointing weekend meant the team missed its first chance to secure the championship.

But clinching the title in Singapore looks to be far more straightforward, with the team needing just 13 points to be crowned — no matter where any of its rivals finished.

Despite a relatively poor qualifying result (by this year’s standards), which sees Oscar Piastri start third and Lando Norris fifth on the grid, the team’s goal looks to be well within reach: Piastri alone will score 15 points if he finishes where he starts.

Team Points Gap
1. McLaren 623
2. Mercedes 290 +333
3. Ferrari 286 +337
4. Red Bull 272 +351

Winning the title in Singapore would still equal the record for the earliest constructors’ championship victory by number of races left – six. The previous benchmark was set by Red Bull in 2023, when it clinched the championship also with six rounds to spare.

McLaren sits on 623 points, far ahead of Mercedes in second on 290, with Ferrari trailing closely on 286 and Red Bull in fourth on 272.

There are a maximum of 346 points still up for grabs this season after Azerbaijan.

How McLaren can clinch the title in Singapore

McLaren will be champion in Singapore as long as it doesn’t lose more than 30 points to Mercedes or Ferrari.

With 346 points up for grabs in the remaining six races, Red Bull is already out of contention for this year’s title as it’s 351 points behind McLaren after Azerbaijan.

With 43 points available in Singapore, McLaren needs to score just 13 points to win the crown, meaning a third place, or even a sixth and seventh-place finishes would be enough.

McLaren’s dominance

In the context of today’s extended 24-race calendar, sealing the championship with six races still to go would be arguably one of the decisive constructors’ victory ever, both in relative and absolute terms.

Red Bull’s 2023 triumph — sealed with six races remaining in a 22-race calendar — stands as a modern benchmark, even though the vast majority of the point-scoring rested on the shoulders of Max Verstappen: he scored 575 points that year, compared with team-mate Sergio Perez‘s 285 points.

Mercedes, during its dominant hybrid era, secured titles with four rounds left.

With seven races to go, McLaren’s title could still match Red Bull’s benchmark from the 2023 season.
