Fernando Alonso was the surprise pace-setter in the first practice session of Formula 1’s Singapore Grand Prix.
The Aston Martin star shot to the top of times late in the session as drivers started doing soft-tyre runs, Alonso posting a 1:31.116sec to outpace Ferrari‘s Charles Leclerc by 0.150sec.
FP1 takes place during the day, so laptimes are not hugely significant, as qualifying and the race will take place at night and so in very different conditions.
Max Verstappen, the winner of the last two races, was the fastest of the championship contenders in third, nearly three tenths off Alonso’s benchmark.
Red Bull is the only team bringing some updates for its car this weekend, having introduced a revised front wing and engine cover, the latter aimed at improving cooling.
Lewis Hamilton was fourth fastest in the second Ferrari.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri led McLaren team-mate Lando Norris as the duo finished in fifth and sixth, over three seconds off the pace.
As usual, the session saw many drivers complain about traffic around the Marina Bay street circuit.
“Ferrari will invent mirrors one day, I hope,” Piastri joked on the radio after finding Hamilton on his path during a late flying lap.
Mercedes endured a rather subbued start to the weekend, with George Russell the quickest of German squad’s drivers down in 11th.
Alexander Albon‘s Williams triggered the first incident of the day when his rear right brakes caught fire as he returned to the pits.
A huge puff of smoke forced Albon to get out of his car as his mechanics worked on putting it out, a process which took several minutes.
Albon failed to return to the track as work was carried out on his car, the Williams driver not setting a time. A “rear brake hardware problem” was to blame for the stoppage, according to the team.
Several drivers tested their cooling vests during the session after the FIA declared the Singapore GP a “heat hazard” on Thursday as a result of the high heat and humidity on track.
