Oscar Piastri put McLaren on top of the times in Friday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix as Formula 1 teams adapted to the latest flexi-wing clampdown.
Although some rivals expected McLaren to be hurt the most by the regulation changes, there weren’t many signs of that being the case so far, although a conclusive test will have to wait until at least qualifying.
Piastri’s best time of 1:12.760sec put him nearly three tenths of a second clear of the second fastest driver, George Russell in the Mercedes.
McLaren had also been quickest in opening practice, with Lando Norris leading from Max Verstappen.
In the second session, Norris and Verstappen set the exact same time to finish 0.310sec behind pace-setter Piastri, although the Briton showed impressive long-run pace, running very consistently in the low 1:20sec.
McLaren is the only team which has not introduced any updates for this weekend’s race, having already tested its more rigid front wing at Imola two weeks ago.
Charles Leclerc finished fifth for Ferrari, exactly half a second behind Piastri, with Kimi Antonelli in sixth in the second Mercedes.
Local hero Fernando Alonso recovered from some engine-related problems in FP1 to set the seventh fastest time in the afternoon in the Aston Martin.
Alpine‘s Pierre Gasly and the two Racing Bulls of Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson completed the top 10.
Hadjar will see the stewards after the session due to an impeding investigation involving Franco Colapinto.
Lewis Hamilton had a low-key start to the weekend with the 11th quickest time, over seven tenths off the pace.
The Williams team also had a subdued day as Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon finished in 14th and 15th.
Oliver Bearman‘s run plan was disrupted by one of the few incidents of the session, the Haas driver spinning at Turn 3. The Briton rotated into the gravel, and although he could get going again, he had to spend some time in the garage as a result.
