Oscar Piastri was fastest in second practice for the Singapore Grand Prix, a session which suffered two lengthy red-flag interruptions and a crash between Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc in the pitlane.
Over 20 minutes of running were lost to the red-flag periods caused by George Russell and Liam Lawson.
Piastri’s best of 1:30.714sec put him at the top of the times ahead of a surprising Isack Hadjar, second quickest in the Racing Bulls car.
Piastri’s McLaren team-mate and championship challenger Norris finished down in fifth, nearly half a second off the Australian’s pace.
Max Verstappen in the Red Bull and FP1 pace-setter Fernando Alonso were third and fourth respectively.
Aston Martin‘s Lance Stroll completed a strong session for the team with the sixth-fastest time ahead of Esteban Ocon‘s Haas and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top 10.
Mercedes had another challenging session as Russell crashed into the barriers 17 minutes in.
The Briton lost the rear of his car after a snap of oversteer at Turn 16 and went straight into the barriers, causing significant damage to the front of his car, including losing his front wing and suffering a puncture.
“That was weird,” said Russell on the radio when asked if he was okay before slowly driving back to the pits.
The Mercedes driver didn’t return to the track after the crash, a significant drawback considering there is no more running in night conditions before qualifying.
As a result of the accident, a red flag was deployed to repair the barrier and pick up the debris. The stoppage lasted for about 12 minutes.
Just five minutes later, the session had to be stopped again when Lawson hit the wall with the right side of his Racing Bulls car at Turn 17 after losing the rear under acceleration.
The impact broke the car’s rear right suspension, and even though the pitlane was right ahead, Lawson had to stop at the entry as a result of the damage.
The action resumed with 13 minutes left on the clock, but not without drama, as Leclerc was released from his garage into the path of Norris, who was driving down the pitlane and couldn’t avoid the Ferrari.
The cars made contact and McLaren was forced to push Norris back into the garage to replace his damaged front wing.
Leclerc, whose Ferrari team was clearly at fault in the incident, is now facing an investigation after the session.
