Lando Norris highlighted his status as favourite for the British Grand Prix after going quickest in Friday practice at Silverstone.

The McLaren driver, the winner of the previous race in Austria, jumped to the top of the times around the halfway point of second practice with a 1min 25.816sec laptime, set on Pirelli’s soft tyres.

The home hero, trailing team-mate Oscar Piastri by 15 points in the standings, topped the session by 0.222sec from Ferrari‘s Charles Leclerc.

Nine-time British GP winner Lewis Hamilton finished in third, three-tenths off the pace, the Briton having gone quickest in first practice.

Championship leader Piastri had a low-key start to the weekend, winding up fourth, nearly half a second off Norris’s pace.

Max Verstappen rounded out the top five, the world champion complaining about severe understeer from the start of the running in FP1.

Mercedes also appeared to be off the pace, with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell finishing sixth and eighth over half a second slower than Norris. They were split by the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll.

Racing Bulls duo Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson completed the top 10 in a pretty much incident-free 60 minutes of running.

Carlos Sainz triggered yellow flags 15 minutes into the session when he lost control of his Williams at Luffield, spinning and nearly making contact with Hamilton.

The team blamed a gust of wind for the incident, for which Sainz was put under investigation for rejoining unsafely.

In first practice, Red Bull protégé Arvid Lindblad made his grand prix weekend debut at the wheel of Yuki Tsunoda‘s Red Bull.

The 17-year-old Briton showed decent pace, lapping half a second slower than Verstappen to finish 13th quickest.

Tsunoda was 15th quickest in FP2, nearly six tenths behind Verstappen.

Paul Aron, one of Alpine‘s reserve drivers, also had his first practice outing, taking over Nico Hülkenberg‘s Sauber.

The Estonian also had a solid day of work, completing 25 laps and finishing in 17th, three places ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto in the second Sauber, the Brazilian completing a 360-degree spin without consequence.
